Ateneo's Fine Arts Program continues its project on finding contemporary expressions for traditional performing arts with a summer workshop entitled "Igal-igalan, Tagunggu'an Tawi-Tawi," to be held from May 7-18 at the Fine Arts Theater.
Last year's workshop on the iogal dance and kulintangan music brought to the Ateneosix indigenous artists from Tabawan, Tawi-Tawi who taught students basic their own local dance and music styles -- and led to the production of the much acclaimed production of "Sintang Dalisay," now touring various parts of the country and winning invitations from international theater festivals.
This year, a second workshop will take place, this time with four young teachers from various parts of Tawi-Tawi who will teach participants their own unique styles of the igal dance and kulintangan music, plus a dose of silat, or traditional martial arts.
The new skills will enhance the restaging of "Sintang Dalisay" this July 2012 at the Ateneo and lay the foundation for a new version of "Ibong Adarna" in 2013 -- both with Tanghalang Ateneo.
Dr. Ricardo Abad and Dr. Matthew Santamaria coordinate the event.
