Jojo Austria’s Unmade Road at Art Verite
Unmade Road chronicles Austria’s reflections on the journeys one embarks on through life: real stories from the different places he has visited and observations on what one can learn along the way.
The exhibit is comprised of 12 paintings in oil on canvas: visual interpretations of lessons from life. The works are collection of recollections: memories of subway scenes and unknown alleys, the lure of diaspora, pre-departure areas, the tales of the country’s numerous unsung heroes. Living in a consumerist-driven world where survival of the fittest is the norm, Austria attempts to paint points of direction, symbols for one’s decision to take the load less travelled.
As an artist, Austria reflects not just on phenomenon but also on human values: the lessons that these experiences can convey. Merging both abstraction and figurative elements, Austria considers life as an unfinished and unfolding journey—a road still to be paved. It is in these unfinished spaces that the possibility of charting more dreams and working for change becomes real.
Jojo Austria (Julio Jose Austria) recently completed several arts residencies in the United States under various scholarships, at the Vytlacil Campus of the Art Student League of New York (2011-2012), Ox-Bow School of the Arts in Michigan (2010), and the Vermont Studio Center (2009) in addition to participating in regular group exhibitions.
Austria finished his degree in Fine Arts (major in Painting) at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. He first became known through his successive citations as a finalist in various national art competitions, including the Shell National Student Arts Competition, the Metrobank Young Painters Annual Competition and the Art Association of the Philippines Annual Art Competition.
Austria held his first solo show at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2003 and has since then held one-man exhibits of his work in Manila, Philippines; Bangkok, Thailand; Vienna, Austria; Berlin, Germany; and Vermont, USA.
