Clairelynn Uy

Clairelynn Uy’s latest exhibition, For Goodness’ Sake, exposes the role of pop culture within subjects of war and violence in contemporary times. Deviating from discussions of its usual causes (political and social frictions), comics, television shows, movies and video games are now put under new light. Instead of these being seen as entertaining distractions to more relevant happenings, they are re-introduced as vehicles through which one’s perceptions and ethics are shaped.

The spectacle of fighting and violence, sugarcoated with the use of animals and plants instead of humans, provides humor and appeal that makes the public’s tolerance, involvement and eventual addiction more acceptable. Cartoon-like battle scenes layered with realistic portraits of animals create a strange and tragically funny reminder of how these dispensable cultures subconsciously promote what society claims to detest. The title, taken from the popular English phrase that expresses exasperation, is ironically paired with these colourful and comical pieces, showcasing Uy’s own brand of creative wit.
