Scarlet Letters from Baguio: A poetry slam for HIV awareness

ArtPipe Events Filed Under:

Mt Cloud Bookshop is a local, independent bookstore that brings the written word to life in Baguio City through various literary activities such as author's talks, poetry slams and readings, story-telling sessions for kids, and small workshops. These activities are often held in partnership with the Baguio Writers Group, which exists to celebrate and nourish Cordilleran writers and writing.

In partnership with AIDS Society of the Philippines, Inc., a leading organization in HIV awareness in the country, the event aims to promote the discussion of HIV beyond the scientific, but to tackle it as a social issue that will enlighten the people of the gravity of the epidemic to the country, to their communities, and to themselves.

Poetry Slam Un-Mechanics

Registration fee: P100 (10% of registration fees will go to the AIDS Society of the Philippines)

Elimination rounds:
1. In the first elimination round, competing poets will be asked to choose, on the spot, from 4 performance pieces (poems, songs, or monologues) selected by Mt Cloud Bookshop and the AIDS Society of the Philippines. Each poet will be expected to perform the randomly picked piece as spoken word. The judgement in the first round will be based entirely on performance. Ten poets will go on to round two.

2. In the second elimination round, the Top Ten poets will perform their own, original pieces on HIV or AIDS. From here on, the criteria will focus on both the performance and the poem itself. The judges will comment on each performance. Only five poets will go on to round three.

3. For the third elimination round, the Top Five poets will be given a surprise topic and ten minutes to write a poem on this topic in isolation. One by one, the remaining poets will be called into the Cloud to deliver the freshly written piece. Three poets will be declared the winners of the night!
