Wawi Navarroza is sweeping full circle back to herself in the installation Ultramar, Pt. 1 Fall Into Place Gathered Throng. Originally framed as a homecoming show to introduce work made in and prompted by her two-year scholarship and residencies around Spain, the work considers another impression of return. It is a return that contradicts a retrospective reflection. Rather, it considers this juncture as a part of a continuum of an artist’s life/work. With it comes a language that deals with formal investigations of the Image while being grounded on the personal conditions that surround the artist’s praxis.
In a sense, Ultramar, Pt. 1 Fall Into Place Gathered Throng is Navarroza’s continuation of her Masters Degree project in Madrid. At the same time the exhibition functions as a prelude to what it means to come out of a situation of gathering experience and images from off-the-shore but losing this archive before returning to the place that expects the artist to harvest and display these fruits of labor.
Ultramar, Pt. 1 Fall Into Place Gathered Throng refers to Navarroza’s Land-ing series and is a variation of the aesthetic vocabulary gained in Spain. The vignette also pronounces the easing into the shift of artistic format as we encounter physical dimensionality in how she treats the image. This is Wawi Navarroza’s first solo exhibition after her two-year stretch in Spain where she earned her European Master of Fine Arts Degree in Istituto Europeo di Design through a scholarship grant, resided in Barcelona and had an artist residency in Cadaques.
