ABCs of Abstraction - AVIADO + BALATBAT + CAPILI
Born decades apart, Pandy Aviado, Max Balatbat and Ross Capili share a common denominator in their artistic pursuits: the contemporary form of abstraction they produce on canvases. In the ‘60s, Virgillio "Pandy" Aviado carved a name for himself in printmaking through his painting oeuvre, which comprise a series of calligraphic strokes. He was conferred the 13 Artists Award in 1970, and the Patnubay ng Sining awardee for Graphic Arts, Araw ng Maynila, 1988. Max “MaxBal” Balatbat coasted along with architectural abstraction in the ‘90s. While forms of abstraction are often associated with representations of obscure personal emotions and experiences, Max transcends such expectations by creating works which assemble arresting narratives. Since the ‘80s, Rosscapili has been experimenting with multi-media art. He uses paint, pigments, and pixels in order to deliver message and insight. As a painter, his signature acrylic layering technique connotes water as it drips freely on and all over his canvases.
Aviado and Capili have travelled and exhibited together in Fukuoka, Japan and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, while Balatbat joined them in last year's 26th AIAE in Seoul Korea. Here, the three formed a bond over a shared love for the abstract sensibility.
The ABCs of Abstraction opens on January 23, 6pm, simultaneously at The ArtPrints Alley and Sindo ArtWall located on the 3rd and Ground levels respectively at LRI Design Plaza, Nicanor Garcia St, Bel Air II Makati City.
