Monsters have become a way for societies to relegate the unfamiliar, the weird, and indescribable a place in their respective realities. What is monstrous is simply this fear of the unknown, this incapacity to situate a thing or idea a place in a world of categories and fixed definitions. Yet New seems to be at home with the unfamiliar and the alien, both figuratively and literally. He constantly attempts to create and recreate these hybrid forms and images, these monstrosities of common sense, as a means of affirming a kind of personal mythology.

Leeroy New(b. 1986, General Santos City) is a prolific young artist and designer whose practice overlaps and intersects with film, theater, visual arts, product design and fashion. He is a Visual Arts graduate of the Philippine High School for the Arts and University of the Philippines Fine Arts. New has received several citations for his work, including the grand prize for sculpture in the 2005 Metrobank Art Awards and the 2009 Ateneo Art Awards with residency grants in Singapore and Australia as prize. Most recently, he has been nominated for the Signature Art Prize 2011 and is a recipient of the 2012 CCP 13 Artists Award.

Primarily a practicing artist, he has done numerous exhibitions and has been invited to participate in the 2008 Singapore Biennale and the 2009 Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale where his works were featured with top international artists. He is the man responsible for the Balete installation(2009) at the Rizal Library in the Ateneo University as well as the otherworldly facade of the Sputnik Comic Bar(2008) in Cubao X. His Psychopomp's Reef installation was the inaugural exhibit for Bonifacio Global City's Offsite public gallery in 2011.

Leeroy New also works as a production designer and at present has worked on four feature film, a number of music videos and short films. New has also designed sets, puppets and costumes for various theater/dance groups and is a constant collaborator of the edge-work performance company Sipat Lawin Ensemble. At present New is developing product designs for Kenneth Cobonpue's HIVE collective and Kalikasan Crafts.
