Fearless : Alex Baluyut + Claro Cortes IV + Luis Liwanag + Veejay Villafranca at The ArtPrints Alley
Fearless underscores the power of visual reportage by four of the country’s top Filipino photographers, who have faith in the ability of photojournalism to encourage positive, observable change. Alex Baluyut, Claro Cortes IV, Luis Liwanag and Veejay Villafranca sync to showcase their intrepid visions of the world in which we live through fine art photography. These images are forceful and compelling yet receptive towards dips of human emotion, and express without the artifice of posing.
Alex Baluyut’s name is nearly synonymous with Mindanao. In the early 80’s, he made his first voyage into the heartland, trembling with fear. “I have returned to her side many times in my life, like a persistent son trying to understand a very complex woman. Needless to say, I survived that journey, bringing back a documentary that would define me for the rest of my photographic career,” says Baluyut.
Claro Cortes IV is an award-winning photojournalist. He holds 25 years of professional experience working as Editor-in-Charge of Reuters Global Pictures Desk based in Singapore, which handles a worldwide network of 600 photographers and distributes some 1,600 pictures daily. Cortes was the grand prize winner of the Beijing Olympics 2008 photo contest. He has participated in several photo exhibits in Asia and the USA, including a solo exhibition at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Luis Liwanag’s images depict humanitarian issues, reproductive health, poverty, and environmental issues and disasters. He is a Fine Arts graduate from the University of the East, and received a diploma in photojournalism from the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University. Liwanag’s works have been published in The New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Time Magazine, Newsweek, Financial Times, Stern, Der Spiegel, The Guardian, and many other international and local publications.
Veejay Villafranca received the 2008 Ian Parry Scholarship grant in London for his project which documented the lives of former gang members in one of Manila’s biggest and most dangerous slums. Because of this opportunity, he was able to showcase his work in the prestigious Getty Images gallery. He was also an artist in residence at the 2nd Crossing Point Residency program in Perpignan, France during the Visa Pour l’Image Photojournalism Festival in the same year. He has exhibited widely in Europe and Asia, including the Metropolitan Museum, Silverlens Gallery, and the Vargas Museum in UP Diliman.
Fearless opens on May 15, 2013, 6:30pm at The ArtPrints Alley located at Suite 324 LRI Design Plaza Nicanor Garcia St Bel Air II Makati City. The exhibit will run until May 30, 2013.
