Sea Life by Joe Annan

Anonymous Filed Under:

A brave new style of abstract painting is about to be unleashed by a young and innovative Filipino born Australian artist by the name of Jo Charles Vargas Annan aka Joe Annan.

Sea Life has been a work of passion chronicling Joe’s evolving new style of abstract. He demonstrates how abstraction fused with real forms and imagery can work when subtlety and careful understanding of the subject is applied.

Not intimidated by the ground rules previously set by the founding fathers of abstraction like Kandinsky and Mondrian, Joe develops his own brand of abstract he calls Abstract Fusion. Abstract Fusion is a blend of abstraction with ‘recognisable’ imagery mixed in to bolster the subject matter. Purists of abstraction might call it a treachery against the movement, for abstract is not meant to depict a person, place or thing in the natural world, to put it simply - not realistic.

The undeniable characteristic about the Sea Life collection is the peppered symbols in the paintings like; the mussel shaped water splashes, the glittering flower droplets to the trademark 9 fishes which symbolise wealth and abundance. With Joe’s Chinese heritage coupled with the theme Sea Life, he deemed by including 9 fishes to each of his work would symbolically cast good fortune, wealth and abundance not only to himself but to the viewer and also the future owners of his paintings.
