The art practice of Migs Villanueva encompasses the intersections of nostalgia and memory. Through the development of a career based on the celebration childhood innocence, the Palanca Award-winning writer and acclaimed visual artist has built a distinguished oeuvre that captures the naiveté of youth.
Even more intriguing, her evolution as an artist condenses a new perspective that sees her progress beyond an adherence to minimalist aesthetic. From the withheld subtlety of her last exhibition, we find Villanueva eager to push the boundaries of whimsy.
The result is a Migs Villanueva exhibition like no other: Paraphrasing Memory. Villanueva’s 4th one-woman show, Paraphrasing Memory showcases works that show the evolution of Villanueva’s practice. The opening event also serves as a booklaunch for her new coffeetable monograph catalog, WAIF with foreword written by Cid Reyes. Both the exhibition and book are windows into the continued development of a fascinating and prolific artist.
A figure of the two artistic worlds of literature and visual art, Migs Villanueva nevertheless brings a highly-nuanced narrative touch to all her works. Noted for her works in verse and fiction, winning three Palanca Awards and an NVM Gonzales Award, she has consistently brought the narrative nature of her literary works to her visual art practice. Mentored by Mauro “Malang” Santos as a member of the Saturday Group, Villanueva eschews the strict formalism, instead relying on the expressionist qualities of colors, compositions, and stories.
