Hubert Schmalix was born on December 17, 1952 in Graz, Austria. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1971 to 1976. Using a refined graphic style reminiscent of Asiatic woodcuts saturated with colors that are clear and vibrant, Schmalix captures the grace and elegance of feminine beauty with a dazzling display of his nude paintings. His profound interest in nature is equally captured in the picturesque landscapes that he also paints. These explorations of classical genres like landscape, nude, portraits, and still life subjects that are colorful and fully expressive have made him a key proponent of the Neo-Expressionist (“Neue Malerie”) movement in Austria during the 1980’s.

In 1984 Hubert Schmalix left Austria for the Philippines, where his subject matter became focused on the female nude presented with a flattened decorative style reminiscent of Neo-Impressionism with a nod to Pop Art. Schmalix has updated these now considered to be classical styles with an interest on bondage rituals in the tradition of Nobuyoshi Araki, the Japanese photographer well known for such subject matter.

With this exhibit at 1335MABINI: Zn, Hubert Schmalix returns to the Philippines featuring works of great excitement.
