1335MABINI:Project Space announces Catalina Africa’s solo exhibition entitled "The Dermis Probe and other Full Circles" from March 22 to April 25, 2014.
In "The Dermis Probe and other Full Circles" Catalina Africa will present a body of recent works she has been developing, incorporating historic, autobiographic, and musical elements in her conceptual approach. Through her connection with Dumaguete, nature and spirituality are instinctively representative components of Africa's artistic language.
Africa's deep interest in spirituality and myth-making is equally reflected in the compositions of her paintings and sculptural installations. Therefore, her paintings resemble more of a sketch or a mind-map of the spiritual, energetic capacity of objects, rather than portraits of physicality. Through the ostensible decomposition of dimensions, she utilizes painting to capture the relation of the objects depicted.
Catalina sculptural installations are like taxonomic arrangements of layers of the real and the metaphysical. Refusing to give assumptions, the artist is creating new landscapes through re-aligning constructs of backgrounds, past and future.
Upon her deep spiritual beliefs and interest in nature, Catalina's work is all about who we are and where we come from, the stories we grew up with and the supernatural that shapes our every-day life.
