SUMMA

Gary-Ross Pastrana
April 11-May 8, 2014
GF Lobby and West Wing Galleries

The UP Vargas Museum in cooperation with Silverlens Gallery opens Gary-Ross Pastrana’s exhibition titled Summa on April 11, Friday, 4PM at the GF Lobby and West Wing Gallery of the museum.

Gary-Ross Pastrana explores the materiality of objects, converting them into another form or state, revaluing their substance. A silver dollar coin ground to dust, hourglass sand laid out on the shoreline and threatened by the sea, and a liquid tranquilizer crystallizing upon contact with light are some scenes in Pastrana’s meditation on things. They inevitably translate into critical reflections on the economic rationality of art and its ephemeral condition through installation and video.

Gary-Ross Pastrana (b. 1977) graduated from the University of the Philippines with a Fine Arts degree major in Painting in 2000. He received the Thirteen Artists grant from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2006. He has been awarded grants as well by the Asian Cultural Council and the Bangkok University Gallery. He has participated in exhibitions in Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Australia, among others. He was chosen as one of the artists in the New Museum’s 2012 Triennial. He has organized and curated shows for Silverlens Galleries in Singapore, g23 Gallery in Thailand, Osage Gallery in Hong Kong, and the Kyoto Art Center in Japan.

SUMMA runs until May 8, 2014.
