YOLO (You Only Live Online)
Dean Africa and Mitch Garcia
July 12-August 8, 2014

1335MABINI presents Dean Africa and Mitch Garcia in a group exhibition entitled “YOLO (You Only Live Online) ” from July 12 to August 8, 2014.

YOLO, an acronym that commonly stands for “You only live once,” is an expression that implies experiencing life to the fullest. The catchphrase has been popular especially with the youth, and has been ubiquitous in online social media networks in the form of tweets, status updates, and hashtags. Accompanying them are mostly photos wherein people try out something new, adventurous, or risky. Another rendition of the acronym that is under the mainstream radar, but better suits current obsessions, is the saying “You only live online.” Dean Africa and Mitch Garcia, two artists who deal with Internet culture, present us with works that offer several perspectives on the present-day preoccupation with the plugged-in phenomena. Their pieces reflect pervading attitudes as to how one reads through such a motto: with much credence, sarcasm, or resignation.
